Overview of Postharvest Technology Division
Postharvest Technology Division (PHTD) is one of the vital divisions of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). It conducts researches on postharvest management of cereals, legumes and horticultural crops and disseminates the matured technologies to the end users. The division had started its research works at the outset of research projects under the Research Wing of BARI and converted to a full research division in 1985 with a Principal Scientific Officer as Head (In charge) with two other Scientific Officers. At present PHTD is working with cutting-edge technologies on postharvest handling, storage and processing of cereals, pulses, oilseeds, spices and horticultural crops like fruits, vegetables and flowers to develop value added products for entrepreneurs development as well as to minimize postharvest loss. So far the division has developed more than 54 technologies and those have been disseminated to the beneficiaries through the limited capacity of the division by direct training and consultation, training manuals, leaflets and folders. The division has strong collaboration with national and international stakeholders like Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Department of Agricultural Marketing (DAM), Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), Krishi Gobeshona Foundation (KGF), SAARC Development Fund (SDF), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), etc.
