Overview of Agricultural Economics Division

The Agricultural Economics Division (AED) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) was established in 1977. Since its inception, the division located in the then head quarter of BARI at 87 Pioneer Road, Segun Bagicha, Dhaka. The division started its formal research activities in 1980 with few manpower. At present, AED is one of the major research divisions of BARI, where a good number of agricultural economists are doing socio-economic research on BARI mandated crops. It is cooperating with other divisions of BARI to suggest economic feasibility of new technologies and findings for the farmers. Without proper economic assessment it is simply impossible to disseminate any variety or technology to its end users. So the contribution of AED towards agricultural research in Bangladesh is undeniable. The division is currently conducting researches on three major areas such as: (1) Production economics and farm management, (2) Agribusiness and trade, and (3) Agricultural policy.

AED is headed by a Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) who is assisted by a number of Principal Scientific Officers (PSOs), Senior Scientific Officers (SSOs) and Scientific Officers (SOs), Scientific Assistant (SAs) and supporting staffs. Some other Agricultural Economists are also working in different Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) and On-farm Research Division (OFRD).

The scientists of AED conducted a total of 489 socio-economic studies in the field of agricultural economics in the last 36 years (from 1985 to 2021)Among these completed studies284 (58%) studies were conducted on production economics and farm management104 (21%) on agricultural marketing, and 107 (21%) on agricultural policy. The research reports already published by the division have created interests among the policymakers and scientists at national and international level. Therefore, AED has published a book of Abstracts from its past studies in 2015.
