Some of the identified genotypes by the plant physiology division have already been released as stress-tolerant variety (salinity tolerant mustard BARI Sarisha-19, waterlog tolerant sesame BARI Til-6, and drought tolerant BARI Hybrid Maize-12 and BARI Hybrid Maize-13) from respective crop centers or divisions of BARI. Some of their important features are mentioned below:
Selection of Salt Tolerant Rapeseed/Mustard Genotype for Coastal Areas of Bangladesh
Jun-536 (BARI Sarisha-19) was selected as salt tolerant genotype.
Key features of selected genotypes
- Less uptake of Na+ ion with higher K+/Na+ ratio
- Produced higher amount of ROS scavenging enzymes like CAT and POD
- Produce less amount of MDA
- Less affected in leaf area, photosynthesis, TDM, and seed yield
Selection of waterlogging Tolerant sesame genotype
Findings
Ses MR-20 (BARI Til-6) can tolerate 72 hours of waterlogging at the vegetative stage.
Key features of tolerant genotypes
- Less visible of leaf chlorosis
- Perform the best ranks mean and low standard deviation of ranks in consideration of all indices
- Survived from waterlogging injury with the higher Pn, Gs, Tr and photosynthetic pigments
- Less affected in TDM and seed yield production
- Less accumulation of ROS (H2O2 and O2-), MG, and MDA
- Maintained higher antioxidants like POD, APX, GPX, ASA, and Proline
- Higher activity of the ADH and PDC including the lower activity of LHD
- Formation of aerenchymatous tissues in roots
- Alcoholic fermentation occurs to provide a source of energy
